Little did I know when my next door neighbor moved in a little over two years ago that he would soon be a future World Boxing Champion. That’s right – my next door neighbor is the current WBA light middleweight and IBO light middleweight Champion.
He is cuban born, and goes by the name of Erislandy Lara. Lara defended his title for the fifth time tonight with a 4th round TKO in Hialeah Park Racing & Casino Miami, Florida. He was the odds on favorite to hold on to his Championship belts. The fight was showcased tonight at PBS on SPIKE – 8 p.m. CST / 9 p.m. EST.
Erislandy’s rise to his elite status in the boxing world was one of life threatening decisions to save both himself and his family. There is no doubt in my mind that one day in the not too distant future his rise from desperation and strife will be turned into a “must see” feature movie. His rise to Championship status in the boxing world is just that remarkable and compeling. Lara’s nickname is “The American Dream” which is probably the most befitting title to his made for the big screen life story.
Lara is definitely a family man. I always observe him spending quality time with his young family and his extended family of close friends and loved ones. When he is in town, there is always an occassion to throw a weekend party or gathering where cars line the street and drive way. But to his credit, the music is pleasing to the ears and nothing ever gets out of hand. The family and I enjoy having him and his family as neighbors.
Be sure that you follow him on FaceBook to take in his next World Title defense which I’m sure will be a masterful display of his boxing prowess. “The American Dream,” my next door neighbor and World Boxing Champion Erislandy Lara is a perfect example of what is possible in America.
