For the 22nd year, a local toy drive has made the holidays brighter for Houston-area families in need.
Sponsored by Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee, the Annual Toys for the Kids drive and community celebration was held this year at the George R. Brown Convention Center on Saturday, Dec. 17.
Empower Magazine red carpet reporter, Iyanni Pradia, was on the scene to capture all of the highlights. The event kicked off with a parade inside the GRB convention center, led by Jackson-Lee, who rode in with country singer, Imij, who celebrated the worldwide release of her sophomore album, America’s Sweetheart, earlier in the year.
Numerous dignitaries attended, including Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and state representative, Ron Reynolds, among others.
A local high school band and a spirited group of Flamenco dancers set the festive holiday mood. Former Houston Texan player Travis Johnson, rapper Trae tha Truth and local beauty queens also supported the Texas congresswoman’s annual community outreach initiative.
At the close of the drive, numerous new toys were donated to ensure happy holidays for many Houston families in need.
