Series in search of “Next Big Comedy Superstar” slated to air this fall
HOUSTON, July 15, 2016 – Kevin Hart Presents: Funny Is Funny, a new stand-up comedy series airing this fall on Comedy Central, will feature a familiar Texas face.
Houston’s own Crystal Powell, one of four comedians selected from the LoneStar State, was chosen from hundreds of individuals from across the country to appear on comedian Kevin Hart’s upcoming cable-based comedy television series.
The show, executive produced by Kevin Hart and produced by Hartbeat Productions, the popular comedian’s entertainment company, will shine the spotlight on a select group of comedians handpicked by Hart from major cities across the country in his nationwide search for the “Next Big Comedy Superstar.” The Houston taping of the show was hosted by local comedian All D. Freeman.
Brandishing a relatable and anecdotal comedy style, Powell’s comedic timing and fresh “no holds barred” brand of humor has garnered the Tatum, Texas native a fast-growing base of fans and also caught the attention of Hart in his recent comedy search.
“One of the things that they were impressed with was as an attractive woman I wasn’t afraid to put it all out there – I wasn’t the damsel in distress,” said Powell of her selection.
Named one of Houston’s All-Stars of Comedy, Powell has performed alongside powerhouse comedy talents such as Mike Epps, Rodney Perry and Rudy Rush, and performed on comedy platforms and venues across the country, including L.A.’s Laugh Factory and the Ontario, Palm Beach, Houston, Los Angeles, and Arlington Improv Clubs to name a few.
Powell’s personable brand of humor has opened the door to guest appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and won her the i10 Media 40/40 Comedy Award, an official city proclamation for Crystal Powell “Laughter Heals” Day from the former Mayor of Houston, and an Improv Comedy Club Producer Award.
Powell describes her selection as an amazing opportunity.
“For a rising comedian like myself, this is a huge honor to be attached to a platform with Kevin Hart and Comedy Central,” said Powell.
Since her selection, Powell has already been contacted to headline for a major comedy show in New York and hopes her appearance on Hart’s show this fall will lead to more opportunities to showcase her comedy across the country.
Her appreciation for Hart for his willingness to provide a platform for up and coming comedians knows no bounds.
“You know he could be in a bar fight and say ‘Hey I need some people to roll with me’ and there are like 36 people on the other guy’s side. I am going to close my eyes and say, ‘Kevin let’s go – just take care of my sister if I don’t make it out,’ ” Powell joked.
Don’t miss the Comedy Central debut of Kevin Hart Presents: Funny Is Funny as the multi-talented comedian showcases a versatile slate of comedic talents on the rise in search of the next big comedy superstar. Stay tuned, air dates to be announced.
