The “In The Black” Event hosted by Odyssey Media (sponsored by Coca Cola, Life Reimagined, and Marriot International) was a mind-blowing evening of stylish socialites, positive professionals and like-minded leaders–all of whom happened to be women. Whether they were in transition, or simply sharing their story of success, this event was the place to be for business-savvy African American women in Houston on Nov. 10. If you looked to your left you could find a judge, if you looked to your right, you could find a doctor, and front and center stage was Mikki Taylor with encouraging words to all women no matter their position in life.
Taylor, Essence Magazine’s editor-at-large, served as an expert panelist. She stressed the importance of feeling good about yourself along with the need for every woman to have a “Little Black Dress” as well as a “Little Black Book” in her arsenal. Taylor provided attendees with a list of her top 10 fab accessories to pair with your LBD: a statement necklace, bold rings, iconic broaches, noteworthy earrings, and power cuffs, to name a few. Some key takeaways were to make a statement and own it, to network for growth, and to love your cohort of black female sisters.
The room was filled with the embodiment of her words–women all in black dresses showering one another with love and support. Some of Houston’s finest were in attendance such as Kachelle Kelly (Boss Women Pray), CleRenda McGrady (wife of NBA legend Tracy McGrady), Kim Roxie (founder of Lamik Beauty), First Lady Sherita West (The Church Without Walls), Hiram Smith (celebrity event planner), and Rene Hubert (Uptown Beauty Bar owner).
The 15-city tour sold out across the nation and featured elements to help women stay “in the black” in their businesses (an idiom meaning profitable). Odyssey Media is a marketing & communications company founded by CEO Linda Spradley Dunn. The company has made its mark by empowering influential and affluent multicultural women around the world with the community and events they crave. For the last 17 years, Odyssey’s signature conference “The Odyssey Business Retreat” (which has featured Vanessa Williams, Sheila Johnson and Ava DuVernay) has built up a global following of 300,000+ women.
“We’re proud to provide trusted spaces for women to connect, learn, and be inspired,” Spradley said. “With the ‘In the Black’ tour, we’re spreading the word about Odyssey by inviting women in transition and entrepreneurs to network and learn from the best, alongside a community of their peers in a relaxed and beautiful atmosphere.”
It was truly more than an event; it was an experience. We walked in open-minded to the possibilities and left out with a newfound respect for sisterhood!
