Hairstylists do more than just cut hair, they help change people’s lives by making them feel good about themselves. And while you’ll find them sculpting ponytails, braids, up-dos or some other hair style, they also provide counseling on proper hair care and treatment.
Hairstylist Joey Oso is very serious about his craft. He stays up to date with the latest hair styling and grooming trends to keep his clients feeling glamorous and trendy. His credits includes working for L’oreal Professional team, Tresemme, Dancing with the Stars, Good Morning America, Glamour, Oscar De LaRenta and more. At 33 Joey thought he would try something that would bring out his creativity, and after researching several career choices he settled on being a hairstylist. Within 2 days he was enrolled and the creative light inside him was shining bright.
I caught up with Joey for a little chit chat.
What are your top 6 hair tools and products?
Paul Mitchell Hair Spray called “Worked Up” it is my everything, especially when it comes to the perfect curls.
My wide tooth comb, I have a millions ways to use that comb.
A blow-dryer’s diffuser, you be surprised on what you can achieve with that. Give it a try.
A flat boar bristly Mason Pearson brush, it’s simply amazing.
L’Oreal Paris Elnett hairspray, a fabulous spray.
What is the biggest challenge you face in your hair styling career?
My biggest challenge still is utilizing my mirror more or taking photos of my hair styling progress.
What’s your vision for the next 5 years?
To be the next Ted Gibson. Lol. Be well known for doing hair.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out?
The road to success will be blurry for at least the first year, but if you just do a little bit a day to move toward your goal, then the path on which you need to go will begin to open up and become more clear for you.
Your best hair tip for women?
Use a heat protectant product on your hair every morning before using any hot tools
Your best hair tip for men?
Understand that as men you can also use a relaxer in your hair to get the desired hairstyles you need. Just look at Justin Timberlake’s hair! Do your research tho and ask around. There are safe choices. Lol
How should one go about picking a hairstyle?
First of all, understand your own features to that of the person whose hairstyle you’re admiring. Be mindful of the differences. Pick your hairstyles based on your facial features, your body type and your lifestyle. What works for one person, might not work for another.
What was your best hair experience?
They are all the best. But working with everyday people at the Avon company and seeing the joy on their faces when I styled their hair will always be en-grained in my mind.
What would you say is your top accomplishment?
There are many, hard to pick. But to pick one, I would have to say, creating my 5 minute fashion movie. I was the director, writer, casting agent, producer, hairstylist and also selected the wardrobe.
