Contouring is one of the oldest tricks in the makeup industry but the new plastic surgery on the go! Contouring adds balance, definition, highlighting and can even be used to slim parts of the face.
Most common areas for contouring are nose, cheekbones, forehead, chin, eyes and lips. When contouring, the trick is to use dark contouring cream/powder and highlighter. The contrast of the light and dark and highlighting give the illusion of a slender nose, sleeker jawline and slimmer face.
Common Contouring Areas
To contour nose: To slim your nose, apply the darker contouring powder/cream on each side of your nose and the highlighter down the center of your nose, and blend carefully. The lines should be even on both sides and you can make them as thin or thick as you prefer.
To contour cheekbones: To enhance the cheekbones/jawline, apply a darker shade to the cheek and jawline and a highlighter to the top of the cheekbones. Then apply blush as normal.
To contour forehead: If you have a wide forehead, apply a light bronzer and darker contouring cream/powder to each temple and blend. This will create a shadow effect causing the head to look more rounded.
To contour chin: For a small, thin chin, apply highlighter to the center of the chin, directly under the center of the lip and blend.
To contour eyes: Use at the back corner of the eye going upward toward the temple again and blend in.
To contour lips: To slim full lips, apply a deep shade of lip liner around the lip line and blend in. If you want to plump up thin lips, you can apply a light lip color gloss. Then apply highlighter between the peaks of the upper lip and below the center of the lower lip. This makes thin lips look full and gives a pouty look.
Remember Don’t Over Do It! You don’t want your makeup to look piled on or cakey. Make sure you blend the light and dark contouring cream; blending is important to create the look.
Once you are done, use a setting/translucent powder to set the makeup and the look will be complete.
