Hundreds attended Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church’s Annual IMPACT Awards Luncheon and Fashion Show, at the Hyatt Regency Houston, celebrating 52 years of service.
Since its inception in 1993, the awards program has honored more than 100 women for outstanding achievements in their respective fields, including this years’ honorees, Jacquelyn “Jackye” Alton, Dr. Rose Austin, Dr. Heather Brown, D.D.S., Pastor Suzette Caldwell, Gayla Gardner, Winell Herron and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.
An atmosphere and spirit of excellence was on full display throughout the afternoon thanks to the hard work of the Women’s Guild of Wheeler Avenue Inner City Visions, Inc., founded by Audrey H. Lawson in 1963. Women’s Guild President Irene Allen, Chairman Diedra Fontaine, Co-chairs, Sharon Cushingberry and Cydonii Miles and a number of Women’s Guild committee members joined forces to bring this year’s event, themed “Supporting our Community with Generosity, Style, Elegance and Grace,” to life.
“Today, we honor seven renowned women with IMPACT Awards for their exceptional contributions to the Houston community, as well as the world, and for setting great examples as role models and utilizing their expertise in their respective fields,” said Allen in a statement in the event’s program book.
The event exuded style and class from start to finish as Melanie Lawson, mistress of ceremony, set the stage for the occasion with an overview of the event’s history and announced this year’s honorees, followed by a musical presentation by jazz saxophonist, Grady Gaines, Jr.
Guests dined on an afternoon meal of chicken parmesan rollotino, saffron rice pilaf and a medley of broccoli floret, carrots and julienne red peppers topped off with petit dessert selections.
The luncheon concluded with the IMPACT Awards signature style show set in scenes and featuring a range of selections from celebrity styles to casual wear to evening attire.
“The lovely ladies of the Guild work so diligently each year to ensure our enjoyment of good food, great fellowship and grand fashions. And, once again, they have outdone themselves,” commended Wheeler Avenue Senior Pastor Rev. Dr. Marcus D. Cosby.
