Chef DeeDee Coleman competed against four other finalists to be crowned winner of the Nzuri ‘Top Chef’ Competition held at the 2013 Nzuri Natural Hair, Health and Beauty Festival this past weekend at the Reliant Center.
Coleman, owner of DeeLicious Southern Cuisine and Catering, received top applause in all five categories of the competition beating out area chefs, Brittany Walker, Celeste Gordon, Lakeisha Powers-Green and Otis Wagner.
Coleman credits her faith in God and the southern cuisine cooking she learned in her family’s kitchen in her hometown of Alabama for capturing the coveted Nzuri ‘Top Chef” title.
“I am still in awe and it is definitely a milestone not only in my life but in my career to have won the competition. I remember growing up as a little girl and always being in the kitchen trying out different recipes while my friends were playing with dolls and today to win a competition with some of the area’s top chefs is an amazing experience,” said Coleman.
Coleman walked away with trophies for Best Savory Dish, Best Pastry, Best Presentation, Nzuri Audience Favorite, and the Nzuri Overall Top Chef Title.
James Harris from HEB, director of supplier diversity from HEB in Houston, commended the Houston chef for her “grand slam” win as he presented trophies to her onstage at the Reliant.
