Person of the Year

Darlene Bond

She truly deserves to be Empower Magazines 2016 Person of the Year because of all the hard work she does in the community. She started a nonprofit organization in 2010 named God’s Lovely Butterflies Maternity Home. She gives free Diapers, free Wipes, free Baby Clothing and free Baby Items to mothers in need. Every August for the past 6 years, Darlene gives away backpacks filled with school supplies to needy children. In November, she gives away Food Boxes to needy families in the community. Every December, she gives away baby items she has collected throughout the year. Darlene hosts Community Baby Showers for mothers in need. She loves what she does. Her ultimate goal is to open a Maternity Home for pregnant teenagers and single mothers. She was a pregnant teenager, and she knows how hard it is to take care of a baby. She gives freely without anything in return. Taking hours out of her busy day to be a blessing to mothers in need. Darlene works full time, is a mother of three, a wife, is in school full time and a business owner of several businesses. She is truly dedicated the vision God gave her. She wears many hats; Author, Certified Life Coach, Certified Community Health Worker and Community Partner. She deserves everything and more for her dedication.

Untorio "Bird" Jones

As CEO of ITZ 4 KIDZ BY Kidz, I often come across some phenomenal youths who live by example, inspire others, do well in school and are working in the community to make this world a better place. It is with great honor and humility that I nominate Freje Randall for the 2016 Person of the Year. She has touched my heart for 5 years and has proven to be a person of interest and character. Freje Randall is CEO of Dancing 4 Diabetes. She is a ballerina who has graced many stages from Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee to the Texas Black Expo where she has her own stage and does health checkups with TSU. Freje is still in High school and was once a plus size dancer working with Big Girls Rock and LS14-16. She has worked to make a healthy commitment to herself and those that follow her. She has won many pageant titles and gives to book drives to help Houston Read and doll collections for orphans at Christmas time. I am so honored to call her my friend, and note that she works tirelessly with Kim Roxie of LAMIK to help young girls find their confidence in understanding their own beauty. I cannot say enough about her.

She is the epidemy of the word grind. Amanda Sapp is a Public Realtor/ Event Coordinator. She deals with clients of all walks of life; Authors, Painters, Musical Artists, and more. She is a loving mother of three and a wife of 13 years. I’ve watched her coordinate small events of attendees of 50, to larger scale events of 2000 attendees plus. She has worked alongside celebrities such as Kendrick Lamar, Comedian Hope Flood, Boris Kodjoe, Marvin Sapp and so many more! Her professionalism with each individual person she comes in contact with is to the highest degree. She is definitely worthy winning the Empower Magazine Person of the Year for 2016.

Carolyn Watson is one of Houston’s finest community leaders. For more than 20 years Carolyn has supported women struggling with financial and health issues. She has provided this assistance outside of organizations. She often assists families with making funeral arrangements for their loved ones; researching for available programs and filling out paperwork for indigent; coaching and counseling on spiritual matters. Although most of her missionary efforts are of her own doing outside any organization, she also participates and serves at New Bethel Church, The Secret Place Book Club International, and Thomas Street Health Center. Carolyn has been labeled Houston’s greatest missionary. I nominate her for this prestigious award.
