Bethel’s Place Community Development Corporation (BP CDC) officials hit the greens at the Quail Valley Golf Course on Monday to raise funds for food, clothing and housing for under-served populations in Houston and surrounding areas.

M.D. Marshall, the new chief operating officer of Bethel’s Place, joined forces with a host of sponsors, including title sponsors, Amerigroup, Niagara Bottling Company, Woodforest Bank and BB&T Bank to coordinate the organization’s 1st annual golf tournament.

“Our goal for today was to raise a lot of support for our food pantry, our resale store and for the housing component of Bethel’s Place and to also make sure that we had a great first tournament that encourages people to come out next year,” said Marshall.

More than 70 golfers signed up to participate in the tournament, including Grover “Deacon” Jones of the Sugarland Skeeters, among others.

Marylene Evans, owner of T&M Healthcare and Larry Micheaux, former UH Phi Slama Jama player, served as event co-chairs.

The tournament was well attended and exceeded its first-year goals in raising funds to support social services programming for under-served individuals and families in the community.

A representative of BB&T Bank called it a privilege to align with Bethel’s Place in meeting the needs of the community.

“Anytime I see such a spark and so much giving and concern in the community it makes me want to be good corporate citizens and bring time, money and any other sweat equity we can provide, ” said  Kay Chambers of BB&T Bank, one of the event’s sponsoring partners.

Tournament play was followed by an awards banquet, raffle and silent auction comprised of memorabilia from various professional sports teams along with a host of other donated items.

At the close of the event, coordinators announced plans to host next year’s tournament on Monday, March 30, 2015 at the Quail Valley Golf Course.
