Raising Scholarship Funds for High School Seniors

(HOUSTON, Texas – March 30) – For decades, the Women’s Guild of Wheeler Avenue Inner City Visions, Inc. has uplifted their community through service, including fundraising to send graduating seniors to college. This year, The Women’s Guild celebrated 56 years of service at the 2019 Audrey H. Lawson IMPACT Awards Luncheon & Fashion Show.

Named after its beloved founder, Audrey Hoffman Lawson, the iconic, SOLD-OUT event took place Saturday, March 23, 2019 at the Hilton Americas-Houston. Men, women, and families from all over the city comprised of a diverse group of nearly 1,100 attendees, including business professionals, community leaders/partners, dignitaries and external partners for an afternoon like no other, showcasing top-notch vendors, a delectable three-course, chef-prepared meal, musical selections by world-renowned jazz guitarist and music educator, Joe Carmouche, culminating with an exciting style show featuring fashions from Dillard’s Post Oak.

This year’s IMPACT Awards Luncheon exceeded its fundraising goal, raising over $100,000 in scholarship and community service funds. The event highlighted honorary chairpersons, Mr. and Mrs. Richard and Aundrea Young (two well-regarded business owners and managing directors of successful, independent businesses, RJY Group and Competitive Choice, Inc., respectively), along with six distinguished IMPACT honorees, celebrated for their many contributions in their respective professions and within their communities: Dr. Grenita Lathan, interim superintendent, Houston Independent School District; Dr. Adena Williams Loston, 14th president of St. Philip’s College, San Antonio, Texas, our nation’s only Historically Black College and Hispanic Serving Institution; Mrs. Cydonii Miles, executive vice president and general counsel, Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas; Mrs. Courtney Johnson Rose,
principal broker, George E. Johnson Properties, Houston, Texas; Mrs. Sumara M. Thompson-King, general counsel and chief legal officer, NASA, Washington, DC; and Pastor Mia K. Wright, author, inspirational speaker and co-pastor, The Fountain of Praise, Houston, Texas.
