Comedian Kevin Hart has stepped down from hosting the 91st Academy Awards a few days after announcing on Instagram that he would be fulfilling an “opportunity of a lifetime” by taking the stage at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre on Feb. 24, 2019 as host of the 91st Academy Awards.

The comedian’s decision came after receiving backlash for homophobic remarks he has made in the past which he apologized for after announcing he would not be hosting one of entertainment’s biggest awards shows to avoid being a distraction.

The comedian announced the original news in a post on his Instagram a few days ago.

The chance to host the Oscars®, Hollywood’s premiere awards show was a long-time goal of Hart’s who said in his original Instagram post that he was “blown away” at the opportunity to join the legendary list of hosts “that have graced that stage.”
