Empower Magazine provides highlights from a newly-released book by author, Ivan Thomas, a man who has emerged as a powerful force within business, lifestyle and entertainment, elevating the public images of celebrities and big companies, as well as catapulting unknown entrepreneurs from obscurity into the spotlight.
“Defy Gravity:Unleashing Your Greatness Within” is a truly motivational and informative book that offers proven strategies to help entrepreneurs, professionals and everyday people to activate their gifts and launch into their own personal greatness. Serial entrepreneur, celebrity publicist and author Ivan Thomas shares 5 takeaways from the book:
1) Blame Yourself for Your Position in Life
Blaming Yourself is the best thing you can do for yourself if you truly desire to attain both personal and professional success. This means, you must hold YOURSELF accountable for what happens in your life. Too often we as human beings have a tendency to blame other people, or our past circumstances for why we are not successful and living the lives we desire. One thing many people fail to remember, is that they have the power of DECISIONS. Some decisions are hard, but you must make them. If you are not happy at your job, if your inner circle is full of negative, complaining or unsupportive people, or if your environment is not conducive to your growth – make the decision to leave. Sure, many of us face adversity and may have been victims of things that were beyond our control. However, you can choose to remain a victim, or you can take ownership of everything – the good and the bad. When you assume the blame, you transfer the power from others to yourself. It is your life. If you don’t like it, change it!
2) Stop Lying to Yourself
Some people will never be successful because they are lacking the knowledge, the work ethic, the discipline, and most of all, the self-awareness to make the adjustments and do what is necessary to succeed. It is one thing to lie to the world, but if you can’t be honest with yourself, you are in a heap of trouble. Don’t let that be you. In order to truly activate your gifts and your purpose so you can live your best life, you must face the person staring back at you in the mirror. Therefore, if you do not possess the skills or the knowledge, acquire them yourself or connect with someone who does. If you have been lazy and not putting forth the required effort to succeed, stop telling yourself that you have done everything you could, get your act together and make the changes now. Also, it is important to acknowledge what your gifts are and aren’t. If you cannot sing, instead of trying to be the next Whitney Houston, realize that you may be better suited for songwriting, producing, or even becoming a music executive. There are numerous examples of people who finally told themselves the truth, and when they did, they were able to flourish in ways they never imagined.
3) Ignore the Dream Killers
There are certain people in our lives that are there with the specific assignment of holding you back. It can be friends, associates, or even family members who instead of elevating and uplifting you, will attempt to discourage and dissuade you from pursuing your dreams. Sometimes they may have good intentions, but due to their own failures and past experiences, may project their fears and insecurities onto you. Others, out of pure jealousy, may bring negativity into your environment as an attempt to knock you off course. You cannot allow that to happen. If you have a vision, recognize that not everyone will see it or believe in it. That is okay…It is YOUR vision for a reason. Surround yourself with dream builders and pursue your goals relentlessly. Most of the greatest, most accomplished people in history were bombarded with doubt and ridicule on the way to achieving what others said they could not.
4) Embrace Your Personal Journey
In this age of technology and social media, we frequently see images of people posting their luxury cars, their amazing homes and what appears to be their amazing lives. Yes, some of them may actually be living their dreams and it is easy to grow frustrated because the same good fortune has not happened for you. However, keep in mind that they are only showing the good. You often do not see the adversity, the doubt and insecurities they have contended with, or the sacrifices they made to get where they are. Always remember that your journey is YOUR journey and what is meant for YOU is for you. Don’t get discouraged. Instead, embrace your personal journey and realize that in order to achieve the life you desire, more is required so that you are truly prepared and battle tested to not only get there, but to stay there. Just because it may take you longer to reach your goals than someone else, it does not mean it cannot or will not happen for you. Additionally, just because someone springs off the blocks faster than you, it doesn’t mean they will end up further along in life than you. Stop comparing yourself and keep pressing forward.
5) Your Network is Your Net Worth
We often hear the phrase, “it’s not just what you know, but who you know.” Well, this cannot be any more true, especially in business and entrepreneurship. There are many individuals who by all accounts are extremely intelligent or talented. Unfortunately, the smartest or most talented people are not always the most successful. Instead, those who are connected to success-minded individuals, or people with access are the ones who truly get ahead. On the most basic level, a strong network can keep you motivated and inspired to become the best version of yourself. On a higher level, it can position you for opportunities you would not otherwise get, such as access to high caliber people, entry into exclusive events or organizations, or even referrals to more lucrative career opportunities. Always keep in mind that you are the sum total of the 5 people closest to you.
