“In addition to being an essential part of the civil rights movement in the United States, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a minister, husband, father, and a proud Southerner. Some of the foods he loved to eat and share, according to his family and friends, are many classic Southern dishes we all love,” teases Chef Rey of his next episode.

Some of the dishes that will be prepared in the special segment include southern fried chicken, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, candied sweet potatoes, buttermilk cornbread along with King’s favorite desserts, pecan pie and peach cobbler, according to family accounts through the years.

“What I learned in this episode is cooking for someone is one of the most intimate acts that you could do for others which goes in line with my favorite quote from Dr. King, Life’s most persistent and urgent question is what are you doing for others? In the spirit of that quote, I shared leftovers from this week’s show with my 83-year-old neighbor to convey the peace and love that Dr. King modeled throughout his life,” shared Chef Rey.

Chef Rey’s aim is to explore the treasures of food through the many individuals he has cooked for, connected with, and admired through a culinary journey that included his role as the personal chef of Houston Rockets Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady to the opening of his former Missouri City restaurant to serving as the executive chef for three of Houston’s top professional sports teams – the Houston Astros, the Houston Rockets and the Houston Dynamo.

The Houston-area chef chose the theme for his third episode to provide viewers with a unique look at Dr. King from a different perspective that pays tribute to the personal side of the civil rights icon. What makes this episode even more special for Chef Rey is that the special episode will be uploaded online on Dr. King’s birth date, Jan. 15.

“With many of the traditional MLK celebrations forced to go virtual this year, I felt that this special tribute in honor of the MLK Holiday would provide a fresh and unique way of celebrating the man behind the civil rights movement who inspired us to have a dream,” shared Chef Rey.

The cooking show’s first episode debuted on YouTube on Jan. 1 and will feature new episodes each Friday. Subscribers to Chef Rey Treasures of Food YouTube cooking show will receive weekly updates when new episodes are uploaded online.
