Sew Much Fabric and Alief Elsik High School Fashion Design Department presents its 4th annual Spring Fashion Show and Design Competition Friday, April 17, 2015, at Elsik High School at 7 p.m.
39 of Elsik High School’s fashion design students will present an evening of Hollywood glitz and glamour and red carpet fashion fun with designs that include casual pieces, trendy styles, formal wear and looks that channel the old Hollywood fashion era of the 50s, 70s and 80s.
“The purpose of the challenge is to get the students to understand fashion history and how it can be used to inspire today’s fashions,” Rosalind Gaither, owner of Sew Much Fabric and creator of the fashion design competition said. “Also, we are raising awareness to keep fashion design courses in public high schools.”
This year’s design competition called for student designers to choose a main character from any movie out of the three noted old Hollywood fashion eras and create a look that is trendy and stylish for today’s wardrobe.
Students will be judged in five categories: fit, quality of construction, student portfolio, personal interview and best overall contest challenge.
“This challenge will be a lot of fun and it will allow the students to be very creative,” Gaither said.
Contest participants will have the opportunity to showcase their designs in hopes of winning a first place prize of $300, a laptop and a fashion dictionary. Or second place prize that will include a sewing machine, a thread tower and figure poses. The third place winner will receive a sewing basket, a $50 OfficeMax gift card and a pattern making book. Prizes were donated by national sponsors, teachers and local businesses within the Houston area.
Tickets are on sale for $7 in advance or $10 at the door. Mocktail hour begins at 6:15 p.m. and show starts promptly at 7 p.m.
