I often get asked which type of foundation is best to use, liquid, stick, cream or powder? Your skin type will help you determine the best foundation or shade for you.

Below are a few key points to consider:

1. What is your skin type? Oily, dry, combination or sensitive.

If your skin is oily, using an oil-free liquid or powder foundation would be best. It will help absorb oils and leave a matte finish. If your skin is dry, choosing a liquid or stick foundation would be best. It will help with hydrating and provide moisture to your dry skin. If you have combination skin, you can use whichever you prefer.

2. What is you desired coverage? Sheer, medium or full.

3. What is your skin undertone?
Skin undertone is your skin’s color “beneath” your outer skin. The undertone is best seen under natural light (e.g., sunlight). Most common undertones are pink, yellow, red and olive.

Once you determine your skin type, desired coverage and undertone you are now ready to find your correct shade.

Make sure you test the foundation on a clean jaw line or T-zone before you make your choice. Make sure that you are in an area where there is mostly natural lighting, so the color will not be distorted.  You don’t want a shade that’s too dark or too light that leaves a pale or chalky look. So make sure you match your shade as close as possible to your natural complexion.

Using a foundation primer first will also help match your foundation correctly. If your skin is two-toned you may have to mix two colors to get the correct shade.

Now you’re ready to find the perfect foundation for you!
