The Achievement Through Leadership Foundation and the Missouri City-Sugar Land Alumni chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity rolled the dice for a good cause at their inaugural Kasino Royale Black Tie Affair.

The Doubletree by Hilton Hotel was transformed into a casino-style atmosphere featuring Vegas-style gaming and entertainment with a high stakes goal – raising funds for scholarships for area students.

The goal for the inaugural event was to raise $10,000, according to coordinators.

Board Chair Fredric Navarre envisions the Foundation becoming a powerhouse in the Greater Houston Area.

“We want to help as many students as we can have the opportunity to afford a college education.  I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to pursue a college education. If Achievement Through Leadership Foundation can assist in funding some of those degrees, we will have accomplished our goal,” said Navarre.

Members of the group have contacted local high schools in the Greater Houston area to bring awareness to the Foundation’s scholarship programs for economically disadvantaged students, high school seniors and undergraduate students.  During the year, the Foundation also provides students with FAFSA training and SAT preparation opportunities.

“We have a lot of programs that we do for youth, but our main focus is providing scholarships for youth of all kinds, particularly in the Missouri City area,” said Annetra Piper, financial secretary for the Foundation.

“We are mainly focused on African-American youth, both male and female, who want to go to college.  We don’t mind working with those who want to go to a two-year college for their career focus, but we are more interested in students who want to go to a four-year college.”

The night featured entertainment, live music and dancing and a host of hors d’oeuvres with proceeds from the night’s winnings benefiting the scholarship program.

Sponsors of the event included Cosmetic Dentistry of Texas, Dr. Justin Washington, Texas Diversity Council, Platinum Real Estate, MWH Public Relations, Momentum Porsche and individual sponsors Conrith Davis, and Leonard J. Coleman.
