‘Breakthrough,’ the real-life story of 14-year-old John Smith, is now showing in theaters, just in time for the Easter holiday.
The movie is based on the incredible true story of one mother’s unfaltering love in the face of impossible odds. When Joyce Smith’s adopted son John falls through an icy Missouri lake, all hope seems lost. But as John lies lifeless, Joyce refuses to give up. Her steadfast belief inspires those around her to continue to pray for John’s recovery, even in the face of every case history and scientific prediction. From producer DeVon Franklin (Miracles From Heaven and The Star) and adapted for the screen by Grant Nieporte (Seven Pounds) from Joyce Smith’s own book, Breakthrough is an enthralling reminder that faith and love can create a mountain of hope, and sometimes even a miracle.
The film stars This Is Us star, Chrissy Metz, as Joyce Smith, Josh Lucas (Yellowstone, Sweet Home Alabama) as Brian Smith, Topher Grace (Spider-Man 3, That ‘70s Show) as Pastor Jason Noble, Mike Colter (Luke Cage) as Tommy Shine, Marcel Ruiz (One Day at a Time) as John Smith, Dennis Haysbert (24, The Dark Tower) and Sam Trammell (This Is Us, True Blood).
The movie was directed by Roxann Dawson (The Americans, House of Cards), and the screenplay written by Grant Nieporte (Seven Pounds) and executive produced by Pastor Sammy Rodriguez and Stephen Curry.
