HOUSTON, March 16, 2021 – Chef Rey’s passion for cooking has opened a number of doors of opportunity through the years from executive chef of several of Houston’s top professional sports teams to restaurant owner to host of his own online cooking show. The Houston chef’s journey continues as he joins forces with Allied Global Marketing to celebrate the March 16th release of Netflix’s new children’s cooking show, Waffles + Mochi, featuring Michelle Obama.
Chef Rey will be featured on Great Day Houston on KHOU Channel 11 on Monday, March 22 to celebrate the premiere of Waffles + Mochi. The segment will give viewers a look at Chef Rey’s culinary journey and feature a special cooking demo where he prepares one of the many recipes that will be featured on the new Netflix original series.
Michelle Obama joins the 10-episode series as a friendly supermarket owner who supports the show’s main characters, Waffles and Mochi, as they journey around the globe uncovering the wonder of food and cooking up recipes with everyday ingredients alongside renowned chefs, home cooks, kids, and celebrities. The former First Lady considers the show an extension of her work to support children’s health.
“I couldn’t be more excited to join in this hilarious, heartwarming, and simply magical show – and I’m not just saying that because of the flying shopping cart. I only wish Waffles + Mochi had been around when my daughters were growing up, because it’s the kind of program that’s fun to watch together as a family, and gives parents the peace of mind to know that their little ones are learning something, too,” shared the former First Lady of the show’s premise.
Chef Rey welcomes the opportunity to partner with Allied Global Marketing in their efforts to promote the new show. “It is a true honor to celebrate the premiere of Netflix’s new children’s cooking show featuring our country’s former First Lady, Michelle Obama, and to demo a recipe for a show that educates the children on healthy food choices as they learn about different cultures and their relationship with food,” said Chef Rey.
The series marks the culmination of a 15-year-long dream for series co-creators, Erika Thormahlen and Jeremy Konner, longtime friends whose fields of expertise (and mutual love of food) created the perfect combination of wit and whimsy. “I have big, lofty hopes. I want to bring the world a little closer together, because if there’s one thing that unifies us it’s food,” shares Thormahlen.
“More than anything, I want kids to experience the pure joy of food and realize how it brings us all together,” Konner said of his goal for the series.
Chef Rey shares similar sentiments, and considers his latest collaborative venture a full circle moment as he reflects on the theme of his first book, It’s All About Color, the Journey of Chef Rey, which emphasized the importance of making healthy food choices that are pleasing to the eye and palate.
“It is a privilege to help promote a project that instills healthy eating habits in the next generation and also inspires them to bond with other cultures. The truth is, we have more in common with each other than we think and the common thread that connects us universally is through food,” said the Houston-area chef.
Tune into KHOU’s Great Day Houston (Channel 11) at 9 a.m. (CT) on March 22 to view the segment on Chef Rey as he helps promote the premiere of Netflix’s new children’s cooking show, Waffles + Mochi.
