Nixon Home Care Breaks Ground on Facility for Veterans and Vulnerable Populations

Houston, TX – June 24, 2025 – In a powerful step toward advancing equitable housing and care,
Nixon Home Care hosted a celebratory groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of
construction on its new 18-unit assisted living facility. The facility will be built to serve veterans,
individuals with autism, and those experiencing homelessness. The new development will provide
both short-and long-term housing solutions that meet urgent community needs for stability, respite
care, and affordable support services.
The groundbreaking event, held in Houston, brought together community leaders, public officials,
and supporters for a program that reflected Nixon Home Care’s longstanding mission of care,
compassion, and service.
Groundbreaking program
The program began with an opening prayer from Claude Lewis, a Nixon Home Care Board
Member, followed by welcoming remarks from Edward Jasmine, MBA of Home Bank, a key
community partner for Nixon Home Care supporting the organizations mission to provide long-
term care solutions for the vulnerable community.
Attendees heard from Carvis Williams, Jr. of the Texas Veterans Commission, who emphasized
the vital impact this facility will have on veterans navigating life transitions. “This project provides
more than shelter—it restores dignity and honors the sacrifices made by those who served,” he
said.
City leadership also showed strong support for the project. Nicole Mendoza delivered remarks on
behalf of Council Member Twila Carter (At-Large, Position #3), and Anthony Collier spoke
on behalf of Council Member Tarsha Jackson (District B). Both underscored the importance of
community-driven initiatives that offer sustainable solutions for vulnerable populations in
Houston.
Debora Nixon, MBA, Executive Director of Nixon Home Care, closed the ceremony with heartfelt reflections.
“This moment is the result of tireless commitment, prayer, and vision,” she said. “We hosted our anniversary
and fundraiser just a few months ago, and now we are standing on the land where hope will be
built-unit by unit, life by life.
Nixon emphasized that this project goes beyond housing—it’s about creating a true home for
individuals who often lack consistent care and connection. The facility is thoughtfully designed
to support residents’ physical, emotional, and social needs, offering a safe environment with
access to supportive staff, nutritious meals, daily living assistance, and community
programming.
The 18-unit development represents the next chapter for Nixon Home Care, which has served the
Houston area for over two decades. Construction will roll out in phases, with updates and
partnership opportunities available at www.nixonhomecare.org.
This milestone underscores the organization’s commitment to building a future where every
person—regardless of their circumstances—has access to compassionate, quality care and
housing.
