SurviveHER, a breast cancer nonprofit, along with the Houston Methodist Neal Cancer Center at Sugar Land, Texas, collaborated during Women’s History Month to host a community event focused on breast cancer education and prevention. The March 25 event, themed “TreatHER,” informed, inspired, and empowered breast cancer SurviveHERS and a community of supporters in attendance.

Attendees were engaged with valuable information presented by renowned breast surgeon of the Houston Methodist Department of Surgery, Dr. Michelle O’Shea. The specialist discussed how to distinguish normal breast irregularities and the signs of breast cancer, in addition to current developments in breast cancer research and treatment. Guests also learned about Houston Methodist’s robust Cancer Survivor Program offerings and resources from Access Healthcare Services.

“I am so grateful to have attended TreatHER and connect with other SurviveHERS,” said breast cancer SurviveHER LaWanda Fanner who is currently in treatment. “Dr. O’Shea was incredibly informative, and I left feeling more knowledgeable and empowered to take control of my breast health, even while undergoing treatment. The resources provided by Access Healthcare Services were also very helpful, and the complimentary massages and healthy lunch were a nice treat!”

Breast cancer SurviveHERS, their supporters and Houston Methodist patients connected through networking, fun and games, thus fostering a supportive environment for those who have been affected by the disease.

“We are thrilled to have ‘treated’ SurviveHERs and attendees with an experience that was impactful,” said SurviveHER Founder Lyndsay Levingston. “Our goal is to serve the community and provide an experience that will ultimately change and save lives.”

Breast cancer is a serious disease that affects millions of women worldwide every year. While October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it’s essential to remember that breast health is a year-round concern. Breast health should be taken seriously and should not be limited to just one month. Regular breast self-exams, clinical exams, and mammograms can help detect breast cancer at an early stage and increase the chances of successful treatment. Additionally, breast health is also crucial for mental health. Uncertainty and anxiety about breast cancer can cause significant stress and mental health concerns. By prioritizing breast health and taking proactive steps to maintain it, we can improve our overall well-being and reduce the risk of developing breast cancer.

The event was made possible with support from event partners Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Neal Cancer Center, and generous donors: I Am the Spa, The Chifley Hotel and Kale Me Crazy.  Their generosity and dedication to the breast cancer community is greatly appreciated.

A fall TreatHER will be hosted in September 2023 in the Richmond community. To learn more and stay informed, please visit www.imasurviveher.org.
